If AU, how is your character AU? Damon was the first Salvatore brother to arrive in Mystic Falls. As a result, he didn't have to covet what his brother had, he was able to have Elena fall for him first, becoming his girlfriend, not the other way around. As a result, with her presence and love, he's a little more stable mentally.
